OLLU Men’s Soccer Falls to LSU-Alexandria Despite Early Lead
San Antonio, Texas- The OLLU men's soccer team opened their match against LSU-Alexandria with a spark, but couldn't hold off the relentless pressure from the Generals, ultimately falling 8-1 at home. Despite the lopsided scoreline, the Saints showed moments of promise and fought with determination until the final whistle.
The match began with early momentum for the Saints. In just the 13th minute, Andres Rocha found the back of the net, putting OLLU ahead 1-0 with a composed finish. Rocha capitalized on a quick break, slipping behind the Generals defense and slotting the ball past the keeper, giving OLLU an encouraging start.
However, as the match wore on, LSU-Alexandria found their rhythm and began to overwhelm the Saints with relentless attacking pressure. OLLU's backline worked tirelessly, but the Generals volume of chances eventually broke through. The Generals finished the match with 30 total shots, constantly testing the Saints defensive structure and goalkeeping.
Zak Averns started in goal for OLLU in the first half and made several difficult stops, finishing with four saves. Unfortunately, LSU-Alexandria's sustained pressure led to two goals in the opening 45 minutes. In the second half, Carson Burkhalter took over in goal and made four saves of his own, showing flashes of quick reflexes and solid positioning, but the Generals added six more goals to extend their lead.
Offensively, the Saints struggled to generate many opportunities, finishing with just four shots. Despite the limited chances, they continued to push forward in the second half, searching for a way back into the game. The grit and fight never disappeared from the OLLU squad, even as the scoreboard told a different story.
The Saints will look to bounce back in their next match against Xavier at home at 3:30 PM CDT. It will be Youth day as well as a pinkout for breast cancer awareness month.
