Nunn and Valdez Earn RRAC Weekly Softball Awards
WACO, TEXAS (March 6, 2023) - Madison Nunn of Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) garnered the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Softball Player of the Week honor for Feb. 27-March 5, while OLLU's Cassandra Valdez was selected as RRAC Pitcher of the Week for the same dates. This is the fifth set of weekly awards for the 2023 softball season.
Nunn propelled the Saints to a 6-0 week that included doubleheader sweeps of the first- and third-ranked teams in the NAIA. The senior outfielder from Cibolo, Texas, drove in four runs with a pair of home runs as OLLU took two from No. 1 Oklahoma City University (OCU), and she tacked on two more homers and three RBIs against No. 3 University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO). For the week, she was 7-of-19 at the plate with eight RBIs and seven runs scored. Nunn is now hitting .319 on the season with 15 RBIs. Fifteenth-ranked OLLU improved to 2-0 in conference games and 16-4 overall.
Valdez collected three wins in the Saints' run last week. The senior from Brownsville, Texas, limited OCU to seven hits and two earned runs in a complete game 15-3 rout, and she threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts in a 6-2 victory over USAO. Valdez added another two-hitter to defeat Scheriner University, 9-1. For the week, she worked 21 1/3 innings and allowed only 11 hits and five earned runs. Valdez had 17 strikeouts and five walks, while also hitting .615 with two homers and six RBIs. She is 8-3 with a 2.27 ERA this season, and she is second in the RRAC with 79 strikeouts.
