Saints Battle Back to Claim Opening Round Title and World Series Berth
Klamath Falls, Oregon- Our Lady of the Lake University softball is returning to the national stage after an impressive and resilient performance in the 2026 NAIA Opening Round. The Saints captured their third Opening Round Championship in the last four seasons, earning another trip to the NAIA Softball National Championship World Series after defeating the Oregon Institute of Technology twice in the final rounds of the tournament.
OLLU entered the Klamath Falls bracket as the No. 2 seed under Interim Head Coach Amanda Davila and opened tournament play with a strong 13-7 victory over St. Thomas University on May 11. The following day, the Saints suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to top-seeded OIT, forcing the team into a difficult path through the elimination bracket.
Facing elimination, OLLU responded with determination and endurance. The Saints outlasted Dickinson State University in a dramatic 13-inning contest, earning a 9-8 victory that kept their season alive. Later that same day, OLLU returned to the field and defeated OIT 8-5 to force a winner-take-all championship game.
With both teams carrying one loss into the deciding matchup, the Saints once again rose to the occasion. OIT struck first in the opening inning when Sawyer Stenson singled to bring home Nita Cook for an early 1-0 lead. OLLU quickly answered as Caitlin Casas delivered a sacrifice fly that allowed Arianna Alejandro to score. Moments later, Reanna Aguirre crossed the plate on a passed ball to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage.
The Saints extended their lead in the second inning when Yezenia Perez executed a sacrifice bunt that scored Marisa Rosales. OIT cut the deficit to one run in the third inning, but OLLU regained momentum in the fourth when Tania Rodriguez launched the second home run of her collegiate career. Later in the inning, Marina Litterio singled to drive in Novalee Gloria and increase the Saints' lead to 5-2.
The Owls added one more run in the fifth inning after Hayden Rockwell scored on a fielding error, but OLLU's defense and pitching staff closed the door over the final two innings to secure the 5-3 victory and clinch a berth in the World Series.
Rodriguez led the offense in the championship game, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, while Gloria also contributed two hits and a run scored. Perez added two key sacrifice bunts during the contest. In the circle, Valeria Vielma earned the win after pitching four solid innings and recording two strikeouts.
Throughout the Opening Round, the Saints received standout performances from multiple players. Alejandro finished the tournament 9-for-23 with six runs scored and three RBIs, while Aguirre batted 8-for-22 with five runs and two doubles. Lilly Rocha powered the offense with four home runs and eight RBIs, and Casas added four doubles during the tournament. Perez collected eight hits and five RBIs, while Rodriguez added seven hits and a home run. Vielma earned three victories in the circle, and Annika Litterio contributed 11 strikeouts across 15 innings pitched.
The Saints' latest postseason run continues a remarkable stretch of success for the program. OLLU first reached the World Series in 2023 after winning the Opening Round on its home field and finishing the season with a 51-8 overall record. In 2024, the Saints captured the program's first NAIA National Championship with a perfect 4-0 run at the World Series. Although their postseason ended in the Opening Round last season following a loss to Eastern Oregon, OLLU has now reestablished itself among the nation's top programs.
The Saints will now prepare for the 45th Annual NAIA Softball National Championship World Series, scheduled for May 21-27 at the South Commons Complex in Columbus, where they will once again compete for a national title.
