A Tough Loss Ends Season For Men's Soccer

SHREVEPORT, LA. (Nov. 8, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team ended its season with a loss to LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) in the quarterfinals of the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Championship Tournament. The Saints finish at 6-12-1 and 5-7-1 in conference. The Pilots will continue to the semifinals with an overall record of 13-2-4 and 11-0-2 in conference.

Head Coach Shane Hurley commented, "We've taken a step in the right direction by qualifying for the tournament. I appreciate the efforts by everyone to get us to this point."

History

The Saints are 6-8 against the Pilots. Earlier this season, the Saints lost 2-1.

Game recap

Both teams started out strong in the opening period. After a caution was called on LSUS's Caleb Marchany, teammate Joel Trueb scored off an assist from Liam Vivian. The Pilots continued to make shots, while the Saints struggled to get the ball to their end of the field.

OLLU had many more opportunities in the second half, but the Pilots kept battling. They were given two more cautions just minutes after the other. The team received one at the 59th minute, followed by Vivian receiving one in the 64th minute.

Stephen Matt Mireles received OLLU's first caution in the 76th minute. Teammate Alessandro Sierra and LSUS's Joe Waters were given cards at the 79th minute.

LSUS was able to score its second goal. Jack Thomas found the net just two seconds after the cards were given.

Daniel Coronado was shown a red card for rough play at the 82nd minute. Two more yellows followed – one on OLLU's Andres Rocha and LSUS's Shane O'Riordan.

Fernandes had the opportunity to score off a penalty kick, but keeper Kyle McLeish performed an impressive save to keep the Saints at nil.

Two more cards were called with less than two minutes remaining – one on OLLU's Jovani Contreras and one on the LSUS team.

The Pilots outshot the Saints 22-11. Contreras led the Saints in shooting with three, two on goal.

Keeper Dominic Pena saved nine, while LSUS's net minder saved eight. Twelve cards were shown, five on OLLU.
